International conference, Milos, October 23,24,26

Milos island, in Greece, hosted in October 23,24 & 26 a very successful international conference on energy efficiency and renewables for insular communities. The conference was organized by the Ios-Aegean Energy Agency together with the Aegean Islands Network DAFNI and the Municipality of Milos. The participants, in their majority mayors and representatives of local authorities, have joined their European colleagues, members of the scientific community, and high level officials of the EC (DGTREN, DGENV, EACI, JRC, EIB.). The aim of the conference was to highlight the barriers and the opportunities for those specific geographic areas of the EU, giving emphasis to the non commercial / innovative technologies and tools which appear to be very promising in the near future, but with a certain risk for investors. As it was mentioned in the conference, the potential is enormous. Nevertheless, the geography and the characteristics of the small islands create a vulnerable environment and RES technologies (big wind parks, geothermal plants) raise social reactions. The experience from the more advanced islands and the cooperation through the Covenant of Mayors could facilitate the transition.

Info-days in the Aegean islands
The Aegean Energy Agency has started in May 2009 a round of visits to selected islands, in order to inform local authorities and concerned citizens on possibilities for renewal development and energy saving technologies. These meetings are coming in a very critical moment, characterized by the opening of a new market, the possibilities of participation of local authorities in investment schemes, the environmental concerns (especially for wind parks and geothermal energy) and the rising of promising technologies (e.g hydrogen for maritime transports). A first meeting has been organized in Amorgos (Cyclades) on May 25th, 2009 and the second in Mytiline (Lesbos) on June 18th with the participation of representatives from local authorities and people from neighboring islands and municipalities. Similar events will be organized in the coming months.
